WHY DON’T YOU USE ANY PRODUCTS MADE IN CHINA?
This is a personal choice that we made when we formed the company. We feel that USA manufacturing companies too readily look to have their products made in China just to save some money rather than choosing to support our own economy. We also feel that the Chinese government has a track record of disregarding the personal health and safety of both human and animal alike in the name of producing cheap products.
WHY DO YOU BASE YOUR KITS ON THREE DAYS?
Three days is the rule of thumb established by FEMA as the average response time to get aid to an urban area after an event; actual time can be longer or shorter depending on factors such as the scale of the event, distance from the relief center and availability of resources and/or relief-workers.
WHY DON’T YOU INCLUDE AN EMERGENCY RADIO IN YOUR KITS?
We believe that having an emergency radio in your kit is very important. However, at this point in time we have been unable to find a quality-made radio that is not made in China. When and if we do find one it will be added to our kits.
HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT COMPONENTS TO USE IN YOUR KITS?
This is a bit of a balancing act! First of all: all the components in our kits have been personally used and tested by us. If we come across a new component that we like, it gets used and used again to see if it’s a good match for our kits. Once a product has passed the field testing it is then evaluated for cost, availability and ease of use. We have tested several products that performed well but were not used; some of the questions that we ask ourselves when evaluating a product or component are these:
- Is it cost-prohibitive for our customers?
- Is it too big or heavy or bulky?
- Is it useful for a variety of locations and scenarios?
- Is it easy to use and does it actually do what it’s meant to do?
WHY DON’T YOU INCLUDE BUG REPELLENT OR SUN SCREEN?
Our kits are sold nationwide and when it comes to products that are applied to a person’s skin there are too many allergies, personal preferences and possible medical conditions to include a product that works for everyone. We strongly encourage you to include personal items such as these and add them to your kit.
WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY NEWLY PURCHASED 3-DAY KIT?
Don’t make the mistake that so many people make and think that just because you have an emergency kit you’re ready for whatever life throws at you. Unload your kit and make sure you are familiar with each component and how it works. Be sure to add your personal items to the kit, e.g., hygiene supplies, medications, additional clothing, entertainment (books, games), favorite snacks, family photos and records.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE ALL THE RIGHT STUFF IN MY KIT?
The best way that we know of to make sure you have a properly outfitted kit is to use it! Our favorite way to test our kits is to go camping with them. Once you are away from the conveniences of life and are relying on the gear inside your kit, you’ll soon find out what works, what doesn’t, what you like and what you wish you had brought.
